David Fights Goliath: The Bible tells it like
it was in 1
Samuel 17 - 1 "The Philistines now mustered their army for battle and camped between Socoh in Judah and Azekah in
Ephes-da.
2 Saul countered with a buildup of forces at Elah Valley.
3 So the Philistines and Israelis faced each other on opposite hills, with the valley between them.
4 Then Goliath, a Philistine champion from Gath, came out of the Philistine ranks to face the forces of Israel. He was a giant of a man, measuring over nine feet tall!
5 He wore a bronze helmet, a two-hundred-pound coat of mail,
6 bronze leggings,
7 and carried a bronze javelin several inches thick, tipped with a twenty-five-pound iron spearhead, and his armor-bearer walked ahead of him with a huge shield.
8 He stood and shouted across to the Israelis, "Do you need a whole army to settle this? I will represent the Philistines, and you choose someone to represent you, and we will settle this in single combat!
9 If your man is able to kill me, then we will be your slaves. But if I kill him, then you must be our slaves!
10 I defy the armies of Israel! Send me a man who will fight with me!"
11 When Saul and the Israeli army heard this, they were dismayed and frightened.
12 David (the son of aging Jesse, a member of the tribe of Judah who lived in Bethlehem) had seven older brothers.
13 The three oldest--Eliab, Abinadab, and Shammah--had already volunteered for Saul's army to fight the Philistines.
14 David was the youngest son and was on Saul's staff on a part-time basis. He went back and forth to Bethlehem to help his father with the sheep.
15
16 For forty days, twice a day, morning and evening the Philistine giant strutted before the armies of Israel.
17 One day Jesse said to David, "Take this bushel of roasted grain and these ten loaves of bread to your brothers.
18 Give this cheese to their captain and see how the boys are getting along; and bring us back a letter from them!"
19 (Saul and the Israeli army were camped at the valley of Elah.)
20 So David left the sheep with another shepherd and took off early the next morning with the gifts. He arrived at the outskirts of the camp just as the Israeli army was leaving for the battlefield with shouts and battle cries.
21 Soon the Israeli and Philistine forces stood facing each other, army against army.
22 David left his luggage with a baggage officer and hurried out to the ranks to find his brothers.
23 As he was talking with them, he saw Goliath the giant step out from the Philistine troops and shout his challenge to the army of Israel.
24 As soon as they saw him the Israeli army began to run away in fright.
25 "Have you seen the giant?" the soldiers were asking. "He has insulted the entire army of Israel. And have you heard about the huge reward the king has offered to anyone who kills him? And the king will give him one of his daughters for a wife, and his whole family will be exempted from paying taxes!"
26 David talked to some others standing there to verify the report. "What will a man get for killing this Philistine and ending his insults to Israel?" he asked them. "Who is this heathen Philistine, anyway, that he is allowed to defy the armies of the living God?"
27 And he received the same reply as before.
28 But when David's oldest brother, Eliab, heard David talking like that, he was angry. "What are you doing around here, anyway?" he demanded. "What about the sheep you're supposed to be taking care of? I know what a cocky brat you are; you just want to see the battle!"
29 "What have I done now?" David replied. "I was only asking a question!"
30 And he walked over to some others and asked them the same thing and received the same answer.
31 When it was finally realized what David meant, someone told King Saul, and the king sent for him.
32 "Don't worry about a thing," David told him. "I'll take care of this Philistine!"
33 "Don't be ridiculous!" Saul replied. "How can a kid like you fight with a man like him? You are only a boy, and he has been in the army since he was a boy!"
34 But David persisted. "When I am taking care of my father's sheep," he said, "and a lion or a bear comes and grabs a lamb from the flock,
35 I go after it with a club and take the lamb from its mouth. If it turns on me, I catch it by the jaw and club it to death.
36 I have done this to both lions and bears, and I'll do it to this heathen Philistine too, for he has defied the armies of the living God!
37 The Lord who saved me from the claws and teeth of the lion and the bear will save me from this Philistine!" Saul finally consented, "All right, go ahead," he said, "and may the Lord be with you!"
38 Then Saul gave David his own armor--a bronze helmet and a coat of mail. David put it on,
39 strapped the sword over it, and took a step or two to see what it was like, for he had never worn such things before. "I can hardly move!" he exclaimed, and took them off again.
40 Then he picked up five smooth stones from a stream and put them in his shepherd's bag and, armed only with his shepherd's staff and sling, started across to Goliath.
41 Goliath walked out toward David with his shield-bearer ahead of him
42 sneering in contempt at this nice young red-cheeked boy!
43 "Am I a dog," he roared at David, "that you come at me with a stick?" And he cursed David by the names of his gods.
44 "Come over here and I'll give your flesh to the birds and wild animals," Goliath yelled.
45 David shouted in reply, "You come to me with a sword and a spear, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of the armies of heaven and of Israel--the very God whom you have defied.
46 Today the Lord will conquer you, and I will kill you and cut off your head; and then I will give the dead bodies of your men to the birds and wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel!
47 And Israel will learn that the Lord does not depend on weapons to fulfill his plans--he works without regard to human means! He will give you to us!"
48 As Goliath approached, David ran out to meet him and,
49 reaching into his shepherd's bag, took out a stone, hurled it from his sling, and hit the Philistine in the forehead. The stone sank in, and the man fell on his face to the ground.
50 So David conquered the Philistine giant with a sling and a stone. Since he had no sword,
51 he ran over and pulled Goliath's from its sheath and killed him with it, and then cut off his head. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they turned and ran.
52 Then the Israelis gave a great shout of triumph and rushed after the Philistines, chasing them as far as Gath and the gates of
Ekron. The bodies of the dead and wounded Philistines were strewn all along the road to
Shaaraim.
I wanted you to read this story straight from the pages of the Bible.
David had drawn close to God out in the hills while tending the family sheep.
He believed God's Word and put his life in God's hands. David was both
courageous and strong, yet tender-hearted and gentle. It was not easy being the youngest of eight boys and
the chore boy of the family. Out in
the hills, he came to put his trust in God. He composed songs about the Lord
and played them on his small harp. Many of these songs are written in the book
of Psalms in the Old Testament.
Do you think he was scared when he rushed to
rescue the sheep from a lion and a bear? Who wouldn't be, but David trusted
God to help him in his time of need. God answered his prayers and helped him
fight and overcome the lion, the bear and the giant, Goliath. My friend,
God will be with you, if you will believe and receive his Son, Jesus
into your heart and life. All things are possible with God. He will help you,
he is waiting for you to put yourself in his hands like David did. There is no
giant you can't overcome with God's help.
The
Messiah, The Savior and offspring of Eve has come! He was
born of a virgin, named Mary, in Bethlehem. He was the promised Savior. The
following story is from the New Testament book of Matthew, chapter 1:18-2:6.
18 "These are the facts concerning the birth of Jesus Christ: His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But while she was still a virgin she became pregnant by the Holy Spirit.
19 Then Joseph, her fiancé, being a man of stern principle, decided to break the engagement but to do it quietly, as he didn't want to publicly disgrace her.
20 As he lay awake considering this, he fell into a dream, and saw an angel standing beside him. "Joseph, son of David," the angel said, "don't hesitate to take Mary as your wife! For the child within her has been conceived by the Holy Spirit.
21 And she will have a Son, and you shall name him Jesus (meaning 'Savior'), for he will save his people from their sins.
22 This will fulfill God's message through his prophets--
23 'Listen! The virgin shall conceive a child! She shall give birth to a Son, and he shall be called "Emmanuel" (meaning "God is with us").'"
24 When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel commanded and brought Mary home to be his wife,
25 but she remained a virgin until her Son was born; and Joseph named him "Jesus."
The seed, the offspring of the woman, Eve was Jesus who came to earth to destroy the
works of the Devil (1 John 3:8). He took people's sins upon himself and died
in their place. He died on the cross for you and me.
The Bible was written to help sinners
and for that reason, it reveals the sins of its people as well as their
successes. David knew all
about sin and forgiveness. He had his ups and downs, but he would ask God for
forgiveness and God would forgive and help him. Many Israelites felt that
pleasing God and receiving forgiveness for their sin was just a matter of
sacrifices, but David knew there was something beyond that. He wrote the following: "the sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a
broken and contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise." (Psalm
51:17)
When David
realized he had sinned against God and let him down, David's heart was broken.
God always forgave him fully. Here is what God said about David, "This was
David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfill all my will" (Acts 13:22).
Q:
Okay, Jesus died on the cross, and had to have been buried, but where in the
Bible does it actually say he was resurrected?
A: There are several biblical accounts of his resurrection. In
the new testament book of 1 Corinthians, chapter 15, The apostle Paul
said
this about Jesus, " For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance : that
Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,
4 that
he was buried, that
he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
5 that
he appeared to Peter, and
then to the Twelve. 6 After that, he appeared to more than five hundred
of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep.
7 Then he appeared to
James,
then to all the apostles,
8 and last of all
he appeared to me also..."
Q: Why do
Christians say Jesus Christ is the only way to God? A: Some world religions have linked or compared Jesus Christ
with men like Buddha, Confucius, Muhammad and others. The Bible, however, says
that Christ is God. John 1:1-5 says, "Before anything
else existed, there was Christ with God. He has always been alive and is
himself God. Eternal Life is in him and this life gives light to all people.
His life is the light that shines through the darkness and the darkness can
never extinguish it. In John 14:6-9, 6 Jesus answered,
"I
am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except
through me.
7 If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do
know him and have seen him."
8 Philip said, "Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for
us."
9 Jesus answered: "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been
among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How
can you say, 'Show us the Father'?
The apostle Peter spoke saying,
"For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to
bring you to God" (1 Peter 3:18). In John 1:12-14, John spoke saying, 12
But to all who received him, he gave the right to become children of God. All they needed to do was to trust him to save them.
13 All those who believe this are reborn!--not a physical rebirth resulting from human passion or plan--but from the will of God.
14 And Christ became a human being and lived here on earth among us and was full of loving forgiveness and truth. And some of us have seen his glory--the glory of the only Son of the heavenly Father!"
Q: How is Jesus relevant to me? A: Again and again the Bible says
that Jesus offers the free gift of forgiveness and eternal life. It cannot be
earned by doing good works; it is a free gift.(Eph.2:8, 9). The apostle John
spoke in 1 John 5:13 saying,
" I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so
that you may know that you have eternal life."
He says you can know, right now. The way to be certain of where you
will spend eternity is to accept Christ as the Lord and master of your
life. That is the Bible blueprint for knowing your name is written in the
Book of Life (Rev.20:12-15) "12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the
book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books.
13 The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done.
14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death.
15 If anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of
fire
.
Q: How can I have help right now? A: An often overlooked
statement is what Jesus says about life in the "Now" He
says, "My purpose is to give life in all its fullness" (John
10:10). Jesus is saying that when you accept him into your heart and life, he
will guide you to a better life by pointing the way and helping you with his
power in answer to your prayers. Commit your life to Christ and you will have
signed-on with the greatest force in the universe and he will immediately work
on your behalf to make your life full of good things; that is, your life will
be more abundant. This is an awesome promise! Things will be better in the
"now."
Jesus is God and he lives in true believers by his Holy Spirit. You must decide what you will do with Jesus, the one who died for you.
Will you accept or reject his gift of forgiveness and eternal life? It is not a matter of
just intellectual belief -- that's only head knowledge. You must open your heart and
take the step of active faith, and receive Jesus into your heart. He's
standing at your heart's door knocking (Rev 3:20) "Look! I have been standing at the door, and I am constantly knocking. If anyone hears me calling him and opens the door, I will come in and fellowship with him and he with me."

Just open the door of your heart, and ask him to come
in. I challenge you right now, my friend, click on the red star in the blue
column on your left and read what is written there You'll be glad you did.
If you have already received Christ into your heart and life,
but have drifted away from God, you have probably been blinded to your
condition by Satan. God loves you and is waiting for you to come back to him,
to ask for forgiveness and trust him to gently restore your life. Jesus
loves you, and is calling you back to him; He is waiting for you. Ask him to
forgive and restore you and put you back on track again.
I hope you understand that God's correction or
chastisement may
come into your life if you continually ignore him and insist on "doing it
your way." A question you may need to ask yourself is, "Am I just a
backslider, or was I not truly born again in the first place?" Whatever
your answer, you need to get it settled with the Lord Jesus Christ.
