The Loyal Dog of Gundagai (Love for your boyfriend, girlfriend, husband, wife, or friend)

Opener: story or illustration There was a dog who deeply, loved his master. His owner was a teamster who hauled supplies and equipment over dangerous and very rough trails in the virgin wilderness. The trails were often so muddy the wagons would get bogged down; it was difficult to get them back on solid ground.  The year was in the early 1800s, the wilderness was in New South Wales , Australia .

The dog and his master were making their way along a rough stretch of trail some distance from Gundagai a village near the Murrumbidgee River . Suddenly, the wagon became bogged down in the mud. The teamster tried hard, over and over, but his team could not budge the wagon; it was hopeless. Unhitching the team he managed to get them out of the mud.

In those days, each wagon or cart always had with them a long and wide box which was used to carry provisions of food and often clothes and valuables of the owner. It was called a tuckerbox. In Australia food is often called “tucker” thus, the food box was called a tuckerbox.  The teamster commanded his dog to stay and guard the tuckerbox. The dog climbed up and sat down on the lid of the tuckerbox. He watched his master until he and the team of horses were out of sight.  Day after day, the dog waited and watched for his master’s return. Although the dog was suffering terrible hunger and other discomforts, he was loyal and obedient to his master. The dog would get down, then up again faithfully guarding the tuckerbox.  He continued to wait and watch for his master’s return.  He began to starve, yet, he endured and loyally guarded the box.   

It was never determined what happened to the teamster. Perhaps he was killed or died of exhaustion trying to reach Gundagai.  The dog, loyally, faithfully waited until he could no longer sit. He laid down on the top of the tuckerbox and watched for the master he loved -- until the end came and he died there.  Weeks later others coming along this wilderness trail found the dog. He was lying there on top of the tuckerbox; he had been loyal to the end.  

Hello all of you out there! This is Rick Lawrence.  Loyalty is a wonderful character trait. People who are loyal are often admired. What does it mean to be loyal? Loyalty can mean doing your duty, for instance, Upholding democracy and human rights, paying your share of taxes, obeying the law or serving in the armed forces. Patriotism is loyalty.  Another meaning of loyalty is faithfulness or commitment. Commitment is a word that means we agree or pledge to do something.  Commitment is also a pledge that you are in it for the long haul, in other words commitment means you’ve decided or agreed to involve yourself for the “long term.”  Lets talk about love.   

Love can be a big part of commitment.  Love, especially unconditional love, means that you pledge your loyalty or faithfulness to your boyfriend or girlfriend, wife or husband, a family member or close, personal friend. Unconditional love is the type of love that accepts a person for who he or she is, not like what you want that person to be. Unconditional love means you accept and love someone without a list of conditions they must meet. 

When people go steady or get engaged, or get married, they are signing-on or pledging, and agreeing to a greater loyalty to the person they love and are attached to emotionally. When people get married, they take a vow. Vow is another word for pledge or something you promise to do or commit to doing. The marriage vow is meant to be a vow of unconditional love; it is a pledge to faithfully, and loyally care for each other in sickness and health, whether rich or poor.  

When we commit to someone, about marriage it is a life long promise to someone, letting them know they can count on you, and that you can both grow and learn together.  Marriage is meant to be a lifelong partnership – man and wife together as a team. It is like a business, and, in most cases, it should also be a romantic adventure.   

Why are so many marriages shallow and full of argument and strife, the man and wife willing to part ways and divorce at the drop of a hat?  We know that most sports teams  have found that to work well together, team members have to sacrifice childish demands to always get their own way. Marriage is also a team effort. Another thing that makes for a good and happy marriage is to apologize when you are wrong, or when you have reacted to something in the wrong way.  

Lastly, are the words “until death do us part.” That’s a pledge of long term loyalty. The greatest form of loyalty is the willingness to do whatever it to takes to love and protect the one you are committed to – even if it means laying down your life for them.  It might be a good idea for a couple to sit down and reread the marriage vow together. I wish I had heard this teaching when I was young.   5 min: 30 secs.  

There was a team: The man’s name was Adam, his wife’s name was Eve. God created these two people and placed them in a place of great perfection. Like it was the most awesome park you could ever see. There was no suffering or death. The Bible says God allowed Adam and Eve to choose to live in obedience to Him, since He, as their master, was the creator of the world and everything in it. Or, they could live in sin, that is, they could live in disobedience to God – each of them going their own way and forgetting about God’s commands and rules. I know many of you have heard this story, but you have problems that hound you in everyday life.  6:10  

As a result of sin, the world began to suffer. Nature declined and got out of whack, and sin and disobedience coursed through the world and the descendants of Adam and Eve began to be torn apart by all kinds of harmful actions: murder, rape, molestations, violence of every kind, sexual immorality, and all manner of problems began to tear people and families apart. Sin, sickness and death have become the result of this disobedience. 6:30  

It is still the same today – because of people’s sin or disobedience to God, the world is in a mess in many ways. Many people want to find their way back to God, but because of wrongful teaching they have come to overly fear God. It is true that God hates sin and we should fear his established penalties, and punishment for sinners according to their sins, however, God has made it quite clear in the Bible, God’s Word, that He hates sin or disobedience against him, but He Loves the sinner.

The Bible clearly teaches that God’s love for us is unconditional! It is written in the Bible, the Book of John chapter 3, vs. 16, “God so loved the world that he gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life?” OK, we might say, but did God ever lay down his life for us?  Yes, he did, God came to planet earth born in a manger in Bethlehem . He was born of a virgin, Mary was her name. And this Son of God’s name was Jesus.  7:30  

Jesus grew up and at the age of 30 ministered doing great miracles of healing and deliverance, telling the people about the Kingdom of Heaven . After three years, an unbelieving group of sinners put him to death on a Cross at Jerusalem . The Book of Romans, chapter 5, verse 8 says, “ But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.   8:00  

In Rev. 3:20, Jesus says, “"Look! I have been standing at the door, and I am constantly knocking. If anyone hears me calling him and opens the door, I will come in and fellowship with him and he with me.”  Will you open the door of your heart and invite Jesus into your heart as the Lord of your life?  He will give you a new life in Him and you will be spiritually born again and assured of going to heaven when you die.  :25  

 Let me help you pray. Pray this prayer with me, “Dear God, I confess that I have sinned against you. Thank you for taking all of my sin upon yourself on the cross. I want to receive your forgiveness. I want to enter into a relationship with you. I ask you to come into my heart and life as my Savior and the Lord of my life. I accept you now, Jesus, as my personal Savior. Help me to live a life that pleases you. Amen.

Boy Hero to the Poor  

Opener: story or illustrationAn article in the Seattle Times newspaper told the story of a young man by the name of R. Hunter Simpson. Hunter was 18 years of age, the grandson of a wealthy corporate officer, and though hunter had access to great family wealth, he never wanted to be known as a rich kid, he chose to live a simple life. He was a handsome youth who was on the wrestling, and Lacrosse teams in high school; he also participated in sailing. There was something that set him apart from many other kids, he had a heart for social justice and the dilemmas of the poor and the homeless. 

Hunter graduated from high school in 2005 and enrolled in University for his first semester. His major was religious studies. He had a deep compassion for the downtrodden. He and his friends often spent Saturdays handing out hot meals to the homeless. He spent summers in Tijuana , Mexico , helping to build homes for the poor.  

The Seattle Times staff reporter, Lornet Turnbull who wrote this excellent article in the newspaper told about Hunter Simpson doing something quite incredible. He had a normal cafeteria meal plan, but he often ate only a cup of soup for his meals. He had a plan. At the end of the semester, he spent the remaining $900 balance which he had saved on his meal plan and spent the entire amount on food which he delivered to an organization to feed homeless children. 17Lines  

Hunter Simpson lived his life for the Lord. He practiced what he preached. He didn’t expect other people to live a life that he himself was not living. He wanted to earn his living and didn’t expect favors from others.  Hunter believed he should use his talents and skills to make a difference in the lives of less fortunate peoples.  He believed he was meant to help other people and to make his Christian faith count for the Lord.  I regret to tell you, my friends, Hunter Simpson died on Dec.31, 2005 of a lingering medical problem. He was only 18 yrs. old and it was hard for him to keep going, but he was determined to the very end to pass along what he felt the Lord had given him in skills and talents. He wanted to make a difference, and I think you will agree with me, we can learn a lot from Hunter.  26L  

Hello all of you out there! This is Rick Lawrence. There are a lot of problems in this world we live in.  And there are a huge number of poor and disadvantaged people in the world. Not only do the poor suffer materially, they suffer also from a feeling of being powerless to change their lives and situation. Thank God for people like Hunter Simpson. He not only shared his faith with the poor, he shared his finances, food and gave of his carpentry skills to help build shelters for them. The poor suffer many problems and many fall into problems and end up in prison.  Many would not be in prison if their lives were more normal and they had the means for better lives.  How would you feel if you were poor hungry or homeless, or in prison today? 34L  

Now, let me tell you about another person, he, too, was a man. He wasn’t poor, on the contrary he was one of the wealthiest men in his community. But, if he was like most tax collectors, he was a stinker, he lied, cheated and oppressed the middleclass and the poor. His name was Zacchaeus; he lived in the city of Jericho . The Bible describes him in the book of Luke, chapter 19.  Here is what it says about him.  

 “As Jesus was passing through Jericho , a man named Zacchaeus, one of the most influential Jews in the Roman tax-collecting business (and, of course, a very rich man),

  tried to get a look at Jesus, but he was too short to see over the crowds.  So he ran ahead and climbed into a sycamore tree beside the road, to watch from there.

  When Jesus came by, he looked up at Zacchaeus and called him by name! "Zacchaeus!" he said. "Quick! Come down! For I am going to be a guest in your home today!"

  Zacchaeus hurriedly climbed down and took Jesus to his house in great excitement and joy.

  But the crowds were displeased. "He has gone to be the guest of a notorious sinner," they grumbled.

  Something happened that day to change Zacchaeus. I’m sure he accepted Jesus as his Savior.The Bible says, “Meanwhile, Zacchaeus stood before the Lord and said, ‘Sir, from now on I will give half my wealth to the poor, and if I find I have overcharged anyone on his taxes, I will penalize myself by giving him back four times as much!’"

  Jesus told him, "This shows that salvation has come to this home today. This man was one of the lost sons of Abraham, and I, the Messiah, have come to search for and to save such souls as his." 52L  

Thousands of people wanted to get a look at Jesus that day. They had heard about  the great miracles he was doing to help people. And many people believed he was the Messiah, the Son of God. Jesus stopped under the sycamore tree and called Zacchaeus by name. I’m certain Zaccheus thought quickly to himself:  “How does he know my name?  ... How would he know me? ... Why me?  ... What does he want with me?” He escorted Jesus to his home.  

Zacchaeus is a story about a man who was transformed from greedy to generous, from selfish to selfless, from a thieving heart to a thankful heart.  We ask ourselves:  “What did Jesus say to him there in that house?”  If only we knew what Jesus said to him. Perhaps we could talk about the fact that Zacchaeus was one of the most immoral scoundrels in town, a skunk, a reprobate, the worst of all possible sinners and Jesus ate a meal with him.  We could talk about the fact that Jesus will eat with anyone, no matter how bad of a person he or she is said to be.  And If you are the biggest sinner in town, Jesus still wants you at his table.  The worst of the worst, Jesus wants to share his meal of forgiveness with you. One thing is obvious, when a person opens his or her heart and meets Jesus an awesome change takes place in that person's life.

The Bible says that Jesus was crucified and died on the cross taking the whole worlds sins upon himself, that every person who believed in Jesus and received him as their Savior would be forgiven their sins and be given eternal life. Romans 5:8 says that God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.  

As I finish now – I trust you realize that God loved Hunter Simpson, the young man I spoke of at the start of this program, but he loves you too even if you have been a terrible sinner. I want to ask you if you are willing to turn from your sin, give up ruling your own life and trust God to take over? You can do this by inviting Jesus to come into your heart to become your personal Savior and the Lord of your life. He will cause you to spiritually born again, you’ll be a new person in Christ, you will have a new beginning!  

In Rev. 3:20, Jesus says, “"Look! I have been standing at the door, and I am constantly knocking. If anyone hears me calling him and opens the door, I will come in and fellowship with him and he with me.” Will you open the door of your heart and invite Jesus into your heart as your personal Savior and the Lord of your life? Story of the Talents  

Opener: story or illustration --   Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence? Let me tell you about some of them. Many of them were spiritually born again Christians.

   Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died.  Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned.  Two lost their sons in the Revolutionary Army, another had two sons captured.  Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or the hardships of the Revolutionary War.

   They signed and pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.

   What kind of men were they?  Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners, men of means, well educated.  But they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured.

   Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British navy.  He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags.

   Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly.  He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding.  His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward.

  Vandals or soldiers or both, looted the properties of Ellery, Clymer, Hall, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton.

   At the Battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that the British General Cornwallis, had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters.  The owner quietly urged General George Washington to open fire.  The home was destroyed, however, the sacrifice was hurtful -- Nelson died bankrupt.

   Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed.  The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months.  20L

   John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying. Their children fled for their lives.  His fields and his grist mill were laid waste.  For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished.  A few weeks later he died from exhaustion and a broken heart.

   Norris and Livingston suffered similar fates.

   Such were the stories and sacrifices of the American Revolution. These were not wild-eyed, rabble-rousing ruffians. They were soft- spoken men of means and education.  Most of them were dedicated to serving God. They had security, but they valued liberty more.  Standing tall, straight, and unwavering, they pledged: "For the support of this declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of the Divine Providence , we mutually pledge to each other, our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor." They gave us a free and independent America .  We intend to keep it!  Will you make that commitment, too?  See:  Eph 5:2; 1 Pet 2:5     31L   3 min.  

In our language, the word  “talent” refers to our natural abilities. Everyone has a talent or ability. That’s the God-given makeup of our spirit, mind and bodies. There is a great diversity or difference in the abilities or talents of people. There is also a great difference in the way people recognize or use their abilities for the good of themselves and other people. Talents has two meanings: Our ability, and then, an ancient language use comparing talents with the value of something weighed. This varied depending on whether the item was copper, bronze, silver or gold.  We are talking about natural abilities today, but that may included money or wealth if you have it.  

Hello, all of you out there! This is Rick Lawrence. I want to tell you a story about Talents. In this case the talents were money. You see, a man had three servants. They were nice people. The man was, too.  It was necessary for him to go on a lengthy trip. So he decided to do something. He was a businessman so here is what he did. By the way, this is a story that Jesus told a crowd he was ministering to. The Bible refers to it as the story of the talents. I’ll read the story to you from The Living Bible, Matthew 25, verses 13 thru 29.  [45L]  

14  "Again, the Kingdom of Heaven can be illustrated by the story of a man going into another country, who called together his servants and loaned them money to invest for him while he was gone.

15  "He gave $5,000 to one, $2,000 to another, and $1,000 to the last--dividing it in proportion to their abilities--and then left on his trip.

16  The man who received the $5,000 began immediately to buy and sell with it and soon earned another $5,000.  [50L]

17  The man with $2,000 went right to work, too, and earned another $2,000.

18  "But the man who received the $1,000 dug a hole in the ground and hid the money for safekeeping.

19  "After a long time their master returned from his trip and called them to him to account for his money.

20  The man to whom he had entrusted the $5,000 brought him $10,000.

21  "His master praised him for good work. 'You have been faithful in handling this small amount,' he told him, 'so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Begin the joyous tasks I have assigned to you.' "

22  "Next came the man who had received the $2,000, with the report, 'Sir, you gave me $2,000 to use, and I have doubled it.'  

23  "'Good work,' his master said. 'You are a good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over this small amount, so now I will give you much more.'

24  "Then the man with the $1,000 came and said, 'Sir, I knew you were a hard man,

25  and I was afraid you would rob me of what I earned, so I hid your money in the earth, But here it is!'

26  "But his master replied, 'Wicked man! Lazy servant! Since you knew I would demand your profit,

27  you should at least have put my money into the bank so I could have some interest.

28  Take the money from this man and give it to the man with the $10,000.

29  For the man who uses well what he is given shall be given more, and he shall have abundance. But from the man who is unfaithful, even what little responsibility he has shall be taken from him.

13  "So stay awake and be prepared, for you do not know the date or moment of my return. 68L -- 6 min.  

This is an upfront scenario and a call for some decision making.  All three servants have sacks of different amounts of money placed at their feet by their employer. Two of the servants drag their sacks to their rooms, but the third servant drags his sack of money off the grounds and takes a shovel with him; it’s obvious he intends to dig a hole and bury his money. Using the shovel, means you’ve decided to play it safe.  The problem with playing it safe is you decide to go your own way and bury your talents or abilities to try and manage your own life apart from God. This is contrary to the Word of God.    7 min:15 secs  

Regardless of where you find yourself in life, whether God has given you 5,000 talents, 2000 talents or 1000 talents, the most important gift he has given us all is His only Son Jesus Christ. The Bible tells us we are sinners, but Christ died on the cross giving His life for us as a sacrifice so that we might be forgiven our sins and have eternal life in heaven when we die. God wants all people to accept Jesus as their Savior. The Bible says that you  will also receive new help and protection, now while you live according to God’s will. Will you accept Jesus into your heart as the Lord of your life? This is not about church, but about your personal relationship with Jesus.  Don’t play it safe and go your own way and bury the truths of God’s word that you have just heard.    

 You can have a new spiritual beginning when you accept Jesus as the Lord of your life. Let me help you pray. Pray this prayer with me: Jesus, I ask you to forgive my sin and wrong doing against God and His word. I am opening the door of my heart and I ask you to come into my heart and become the Lord of my life. Help me to live now, in a way that pleases you. Amen.  8 min:25 secs  

Now, if you are already spiritually born again, and a disciple of Jesus. Let me read the dictionary definition of a disciple: a disciple is one who accepts and assists in spreading the doctrines of another.  God’s message to you is a matter of discipleship. What kind of disciple are you? Have you buried your talents, doing nothing to assist in the spreading of God’s word and letting the world know about Jesus? Time is short, Jesus is coming to earth again What will you say?  If you've buried your talents, do the courageous thing, get your shovel, dig up those talents and ask God to help you invest them in reaching the world for Jesus Christ.
